I'm currently reading Killing Yourself to Live by Chuck Klosterman, and it's got me thinking a lot about how dying young turns people into legends.
The description on the back of the book says Klosterman "...wanted to know why the greatest career move any musician can make is to stop breathing ... and what this means for the rest of us."
Because I grew up in the nineties, I automatically use Kurt Cobain to relate to this. What would his career be like today if he was still alive? What would the next Nirvana album have sounded like? What if it wasn't any good? Would he be washed up now?
He killed himself at the peak of his career and he never had to deal with "fading away." So now we will never say, "Oh remember back when Nirvana used to be good?" It sounds heartless of me to say.. but in some way I am strangely grateful for this.
Now it's entirely possible (and even probable) that he would have gone on to become an even greater rock legend by living. Maybe he would have turned out albums that made Nevermind look only "okay." But I tend to think the worst.
